STEVE BERKOWITZ, ESQ.
Steve Berkowitz has enjoyed a distinguished career as a civil-trial attorney and more recently as a mediator and arbitrator. A lawyer for 30 years and a mediator/arbitrator for 8 years, Steve brings a wealth of experience to a wide variety of ADR cases. His knowledge of the law, his people skills, an innate sense of fairness and intuitive sense of "what works" in a given situation allows Steve to be an effective mediator and arbitrator.

  • EXPERIENCE
    Steve became a part-time ADR provider in 1996 before shifting his focus entirely to that area by 1998. Steve was chosen to be one of a small number of arbitrators to rule on more than 20,000 claims that were brought as part of a class-action suit against the US Department of Agriculture by African-American farmers. Steve decided more than 400 such claims based solely on written submissions. As a result of this work, he has extensive experience with the specialty of arbitration by mail, where cases are decided by written submissions. An ADR specialist, Steve was a panelist with a national mediation firm from 1996 - 2001 before becoming affiliated with Conflict Resolution Services, Inc. (CRS) in 2002.

    Steve has been a speaker at Colorado Trial Lawyers Associations (CTLA) programs and has made numerous presentations at a variety of law firms on the topic of ADR. He is also the co-author of several ADR articles with Joe Epstein for publications including Trial Talk and Colorado Lawyer. During his 30 years in private practice, Steve's specialty was personal-injury cases, although he also handled numerous employment, security and commercial cases.
    PROFESSIONAL POSITIONS
    Steve has served multiple terms on the CTLA's Board of Directors and as the Chair Person of the CBA's inter-professional committee, which mediated disputes between attorneys and members of other professions. He has also served on the CBA's Board of Governors.
    EDUCATION
    Steve is a graduate of Colorado University and the University of Denver College of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review. His mediation training was at CDR Associates.
